Wi-SUN Modules
( number of products: 4 )Wi-SUN modules by Quectel are modern communication solutions designed for building extensive, energy-efficient, and reliable IoT networks. Thanks to support for the Wi-SUN FAN (Field Area Network) standard, they enable the creation of scalable IPv6-based mesh networks, ideal for smart city infrastructure, metering systems, industrial applications, and Smart City deployments. Quectel modules offer high resistance to interference, long transmission range, and stable communication even in demanding industrial environments.
What is Wi-SUN technology?
Wi-SUN (Wireless Smart Ubiquitous Network) is an open wireless communication standard designed for large-scale IoT networks requiring high reliability, security, and scalability. The technology is based on the IEEE 802.15.4g standard and IPv6 mesh communication, enabling devices to relay data between each other within a self-healing network.
Unlike traditional star-topology networks, Wi-SUN enables multi-hop communication, allowing the network to cover thousands of devices distributed over a large area - without the need for multiple access points. The technology uses sub-GHz frequency bands, providing excellent range, high signal penetration, and stable operation in urban and industrial environments.
The Wi-SUN FAN 1.1 standard further enhances throughput, security, and interoperability between devices from different manufacturers, making this technology an attractive solution for modern Smart Grid and Smart City deployments.

Wi-SUN compared to other IoT communication technologies
Wi-SUN vs Zigbee / Thread
Wi-SUN was designed for large-scale outdoor infrastructure networks, while Zigbee and Thread are mainly used in smaller indoor networks such as Smart Home and building automation systems.
Wi-SUN vs LoRaWAN
Wi-SUN offers lower latency, higher responsiveness, and more reliable bidirectional communication, making it better suited for applications requiring near real-time data transmission.
Wi-SUN vs NB-IoT / LTE-M
Unlike cellular technologies, Wi-SUN networks can operate independently of GSM operators, providing full control over the infrastructure and eliminating subscription costs.
Wi-SUN vs Bluetooth / BLE
Bluetooth Low Energy is mainly used for short-range communication and small device networks such as wearables, beacons, and consumer electronics. Wi-SUN offers significantly longer range, the ability to build large-scale mesh networks, and better scalability for urban and industrial infrastructure.
Wi-SUN vs Wi-Fi
Traditional Wi-Fi provides high throughput, but it also involves higher power consumption and lower efficiency in very large IoT networks. Wi-SUN was specifically designed for low-power IoT devices requiring long range, high reliability, and support for thousands of nodes within a single network.
Typical applications of Wi-SUN modules
Wi-SUN modules are ideally suited for applications requiring reliable communication across large areas and support for numerous IoT devices.
The most common applications include:
- smart electricity, gas, and water meters (Smart Metering / AMI)
- smart street lighting
- Smart City systems and intelligent urban infrastructure
- environmental monitoring and urban sensors
- industrial automation and Industrial IoT
- energy management systems
- precision agriculture and crop monitoring
- Smart Grid energy network management
- critical infrastructure monitoring
- telemetry systems and remote data acquisition
- smart parking and transportation systems
- large-scale distributed sensor networks
